Negative SEO: Martin McDonald Takes on Matt Cutts

Have you ever heard of the term “Negative SEO”?

It’s something that’s used in search engine optimization circles to lessen your competitior’s website in the eyes of Google.

It could involve buying spammy links that link to your competitors. Or it could mean creating content that duplicates your competitor’s website. And even more nefarious, it could mean approaching sites that link to your competitors and asking them to remove their links.

Negative SEO is not for the faint of heart.

But it is apparently for those with a sense of humor. Martin McDonald, who runs a terrific blog about SEO and inbound marketing, posted earlier this month about using duplicate content and wildcard subdomains to bring down a competitor’s site. And the example site he uses belongs to Google Guru Matt Cutts.

You can see an example of how easy it is to check for a wildcard subdomain. Just type it in your browser.

It’s definitely worth checking this post out.
